PhD Studentships in Newcastle University Business School

Duration of the award: A number of three-year, full-time PhD studentships for students starting their studies in the academic year 2010/11.

Project Description

Applicants are encouraged to align applications with the current research activities of the school in the following research areas:

• Accounting and finance
• Economics
• Human resource management
• Innovation and entrepreneurship
• Marketing
• Strategy and operations management

Value of the Award and Eligibility

The studentship will cover PhD fees at the home/UK rate and a level of subsistence equal to that provided by ESRC studentships (£13,590 in 2010/11). As part of a structured package of development, the holder of the studentship will also have the opportunity to undertake a small amount of teaching within the school. Payment for this will be at an hourly rate (currently £26.96), which will be in addition to the annual studentship.

Person Specification

Applicants for the studentship should have a good honours degree (first class or upper second) in an area related to their proposed field of study and should demonstrate their capacity and potential for succeeding in a research-driven environment. Masters-level qualification in a relevant subject area would be advantageous.

How to Apply
You must complete the University's postgraduate application form. Select the appropriate MPhil/PhD degree (Accounting and Finance, Business and management, Economics, Marketing) as the programme of study. A covering letter should be attached quoting the title of the studentship and reference number NUB07.

Applications should include a full CV, a brief research proposal of around 1,000 words that outlines the applicant’s research interests and fit with the school’s existing research activities, and a personal statement of around 500 words setting out their reasons for applying and how pursuing a doctoral research degree fits in their long-term objectives and interests.

Project Description:
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory invites applications for Postdoctoral and Post-Masters term appointments in the Computer Science Research Group of the Computer Science and Mathematics Division. Opportunities are anticipated in several of the group’s projects, in both research and software development roles, and more than one appointment may be considered. college education

The Group’s research covers a broad spectrum of areas associated with high-performance parallel and distributed computing and interacts strongly with large-scale applications in several scientific fields, including computational biology, plasma physics, computational chemistry, and climate modeling. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Operating systems
  • Compilers
  • Computer architectures
  • Component middleware for HPC
  • Software testing infrastructures
  • Deployment and maintenance of distributed/grid software environments
  • Interface contracts, design by contract methodologies
  • Fault tolerance for systems- and application-level software, and algorithms
  • Virtualization techniques, hypervisors, and virtual environments
  • Reliability, availability, and serviceability of HPC systems; monitoring and modeling
  • Accelerators (e.g. FPGA, GPGPU) for scientific applications (especially computational biology)
  • HPC I/O architectures
  • Parallel programming models and languages

Successful candidates will have a proven track record in one or more of the areas of interest, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team. Experience in high-performance computing would be valuable, and is required for some projects. Demonstrated experience with the development of large, complex software systems would also be beneficial. Applicants should clearly state relevant experience and skills, including level of proficiency, and indicate whether they are seeking a research-oriented or software development position.

Qualifications:
Master’s and/or Ph.D. degree required
For a postdoctoral position, an earned Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering or a closely related discipline is required. A successfully defended Ph.D. dissertation is considered acceptable to start the appointment with the expectation that the Ph.D. will be granted at the close of the next academic term of the granting institution.
For a post-master’s position, an earned master’s in computer science, computer engineering or a closely related discipline is required. For this appointment, the master’s degree must have been completed and granted by the university at the time of starting the appointment.

Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

The Department of Computing at Goldsmiths is pleased to announce up to three 3-year full-time PhD studentships, available from October 2010.

The Department of Computing is a leading centre for the study of computer science within creative, cognitive and social contexts. Research groups within the Department include Intelligent Sound and Music Systems, and Narrative and Interactive Media. In addition, the Department is an integral part of two College-wise research centres: the Centre for Cognition, Computation and Culture, and the Goldsmiths Digital Studios.


The Department offers two PhD programmes:

* PhD in Computing (covering all aspects of computer science, and examined by thesis and viva)
* PhD in Arts and Computational Technology (containing a practice-led component, and examined by thesis, viva, and a practical component in a form appropriate to the artistic and technical project)

Studentships, consisting of awards covering fees (home or overseas) and a stipend of £13,590 per annum, will be awarded to exceptional candidates with the potential to enhance the Department's overall research, and/or to make a significant contribution to the work of a research group or centre.
